  1. OK Donnie, here is the thing. Some plants may have 100 common names. Any one of them is just as correct as the others. If you want to call this plant “Lesser Buttercup”, then that is as correct as any other common name. However, almost no one else will know what you are talking about. It doesn’t get much better when you use scientific names. This plant has many scientific names. Here are a few: Ranunculus abortivus ssp. acrolasius, Ranunculus abortivus var. acrolasius, Ranunculus abortivus var. eucyclus, Ranunculus abortivus var. indivisus, Ranunculus abortivus var. typicus. Confusing isn’t it. I take my scientific name from the Tennessee-Kentucky Plant Atlas. It seems to be the most up to date for our area. I try and list as many common names as I know. I have not seen the name “Lesser Buttercup” used for any plant. Probably way more information than you were looking for. Happy Trails… George
